The Difference Between Brands of Diagnostic Scan Tools

Aftermarket Automotive Parts and Equipment Brands You Should Know About

The diagnostic scan tool aftermarket manufacturers play a big role in the ever-evolving automotive industry.  We know that automotive diagnostic tools will become increasingly pivotal to most automotive service providers in the future.

The digitisation of a vehicle’s components has evolved from the reserve of the specialist workshop, to a key component for any garage wanting to offer a comprehensive range of services to their customers. You can gear-up and take advantage of this rapidly growing, profitable opportunity.

Looking back at the early 2000s, one can see just how far automotive technology has come in recent years (many systems on the vehicle were still mostly mechanical and the professionals who serviced them were called mechanics for good reason after all). Fast-forward and that just won’t cut it anymore in today’s times, as modern vehicles can have up to 80 ECU’s (Electronic Control Unit) that are embedded in systems that control electrical subsystems of the vehicle.

Below is a list of some of the most notable and relevant diagnostic brands in the market and we would like to share a brief history of each brand as well as to give you an insight into which brand could help your purchasing decision to suit your needs.

Be sure to check out our full range of automotive diagnostic scanners (some brands and products are not mentioned in this post).

Autel

Autel specializes in the R&D (Research and Development), production, sales and service of automotive intelligent diagnostics, detection and analysis systems and automotive electronic components. Autel products are mainly sold to more than 50 countries and regions such as the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Australia. Autel is one of the world’s leading providers of automotive intelligent diagnostics, inspection and TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) products and services (you can read more about them here).

Autel is a relatively new addition to the automotive industry. Launched in 2004, they have grown substantially over the years and have proven to keep their ground by offering relatively higher build quality tools and equipment at very competitive pricing.

Since the launch of their first intelligent code reader in 2005, Autel has grown in every aspect and has gone on to become one of the world’s leading manufacturers and suppliers of professional diagnostic tools and comprehensive TPMS solutions in the automotive aftermarket.

Their product range is fairly small compared to Bosch and Launch, as they solely focus on passenger vehicle equipment, offering a full line of automotive diagnostic tools with industry-leading technology, including tire pressure monitoring systems as well as specialized vehicle calibration tools and Key programming tools.

The specific diagnostic scan tool units that we stock and would recommend are:

  • Autel MX808 could be considered one of their best starter units for mechanics and DIY enthusiasts, as it is a very capable and easy to use as entry to mid-level diagnostic scanning tool, capable of performing both basic and professional tasks such as all-system vehicle  diagnostic scans, fault clearing, service functions as well as live data reading with a comprehensive vehicle coverage of +80 makes.
  • Autel MS906Pro could be considered their middle of the range flagship model (ideal for most auto service providers). It has all the functionality of the Autel MX808, but with a bit more advanced diagnostic functions like actuation/component testing, coding and guided functions.
  • Autel Maxisys Ultra / Autel MaxiSys MS919 could be considered their top of the range diagnostic scan tool with the most advanced software and hardware features (advanced J2534 programming, built-in oscilloscope, can-bus check and range of intelligent diagnostic applications to help make your life easier and quicker).

Launch

Founded in 1992, the Chinese brand Launch started as a simple automotive-focused diagnostic tools manufacturer before expanding in the early 2000s, offering a wide range of equipment and services solutions for workshops. Launch is one first high-tech enterprises from China that dedicated their resources to the research and development of automotive diagnostics tools.

They offer high-quality products at a very competitive market price and a wider dealer and distributor network across the world. One thing worth knowing is that the availability of spare parts is limited and can be quite hard to find, especially for older, discontinued models.

Launch continues to extend its global reach with over 400 distributors in 60 countries around the globe. With South Africa being one of the most important overseas markets for Launch.

Their product range includes vehicle lifting, engine management, wheel management, as well as diagnostics equipment.

The specific diagnostic scan tool that we stock and would recommend are:

  • Launch Creader Professional 349 could be considered one of their best starter units for mechanics and DIY enthusiasts, as it is a very capable and easy to use as entry to mid-level diagnostic scanning tool, capable of performing both basic and professional tasks such as all-system vehicle  diagnostic scans, fault clearing, service functions as well as live data reading with a comprehensive vehicle coverage (similar to the Autel MX808)

  • Launch X431 PRO V4.0 could be considered their middle of the range flagship model (ideal for most auto service providers). It has all the functionality of the Autel MX808, but with a bit more advanced diagnostic functions like actuation/component testing, coding and guided functions (similar to the Autel MS906 Pro, with slightly less price but also less functions).

Vident

Vident Tech is a prominent Chinese professional supplier of diagnostic products, service and solutions in the aftermarket that was founded in 2017. Founded by a group of experts and engineers in the industry, Vident offers a full line of automotive diagnostic products with industry-leading technology at a very affordable price point.

Its product line-up consists of  Diagnostic system tools that can range from basic and enhanced OBDII code readers, innovative full system scan tools, specialty service tools, professional scan tools, and comprehensive wireless diagnostic systems.

The reason we started working with Vident is that we felt they had a great value-for-money offering especially for the more entry-level diagnostic scanners. This is ideal for unfamiliar/new auto service providers wanting to learn diagnostics or DIY enthusiasts wanting to have good coverage and functions with a low capital cost (Vident does not compete much in the higher end range with more advanced diagnostic functions).

The most popular series for the Vident range is the iMax series (which is vehicle specific – e.g. a diagnostic unit for BMW or VW etc).

They preliminary started as a manufacturer of hand tools and machinery  which, with years, has helped the brand gain respect in the industry  as well as expand their product range to provide more automotive related equipment and industrial machinery  such as diagnostic tools for passenger vehicles as well as trucks, power tools and everything in between.

With their reputation for high-quality tools, mostly aimed towards professionals, Snap-on tools are considerably expensive compared to their competitors.

Bosch

Robert Bosch GmgH, commonly known as Bosch. Is one of the oldest multinational engineering and technology companies founded in 1886 in Stuttgart Germany. Through the years, Bosch has become one of the world’s leaders in the production of reliable products in various fields. Bosch manufactures high-quality products at quite a steep price compared to its competitors, which is arguably acceptable due to its brand history for consistency and continuous delivery of fantastic products.

Some of their most successful products consist of a range of power tools such as grinders, drills, impact tools to name a few. When it comes to diagnostics tools, Bosch scanners technology hasn’t evolved quite as much compared to its rivals. thus, impacting some of its product functionality, capabilities as well as vehicle coverage.

Hopefully this post has provided you with enough insight to make an informed decision about the diagnostic brand and model. We offer a wide range of high-quality products from few of the brands listed above.

Buying a diagnostic scan tool is not simple, it can take a great deal of research to find exactly what you need (the brand you align with, the important functions and suitable price point)

Over the past ten years, we have sold over 2000 diagnostic machines and have made sure to support our customers every step of the way. We have also experienced that some companies just try to make a quick profit by providing their customers products without any after sale support which eventually lead them to be unsatisfied and having nowhere to go.
